Halloween DVD’s Review and Giveaway

It's fun to watch thematic shows that coincide with the holidays and seasons.  Halloween is usually equated with scary shows that I don't think are appropriate for children but NCircle Entertainment now has 3 PBS Halloween DVD's. My daughter loves them.  Sid the Science Kid was her favorite.  So after you pick your pumpkins you can have something fun to watch!

The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! Tricks and Treats

A new spooky adventure this DVD brings, with The Cat, Nick and Sally, Fish and the Things. Meet the eeriest critters you have ever seen, arrived just in time for this Halloween! There will be lots of tricks and, of course lots of treats, to share with the animal friends you will meet! There's a coconut crab, spider monkeys and bats, and plenty more fun with The Cat in the Hat!

Sid the Science Kid: Sid's Spooky Halloween

It's Halloween! Join Sid and his friends as they discover how bats catch mosquitoes, why spiders are expert engineer web builders, and how skeletons make up the foundation of our bodies. The kids dress up to celebrate Halloween at school, and Teacher Suzie leads them in a special Halloween parade song to show off their costumes! With Sid the Science Kid, Halloween can be spooky and scientific!

WordWorld: A Kooky Spooky Halloween

A Kooky Spooky Halloween
The WordFriends get their share of scares the night before Halloween, when Pig sleep walks and everyone thinks he's a ghost!
Sheep's Halloween Costume
Sheep is making herself a super special fairy costume to wear for the big Halloween party. But what will she do when her WordFriends need pieces of her costume for their own use?

Natural Vog Remedy

Hawaii has been covered in vog for the past few days.
What's vog?
Vog is a form of air pollution that results when sulfur dioxide and other gases and particles emitted by an erupting volcano react with oxygen and moisture in the presence of sunlight. The word is a portmanteau of the words "volcanic" and "smog". The term is in common use in the Hawaiian islands, where the Kīlauea volcano, has been erupting continuously since 1983. Based on June 2008 measurements, Kīlauea emits 2,000 - 4,000 tons of sulfur dioxide every day. (Taken from Wikipedia)
Health Risks from Vog

Vog contains chemicals that can damage the environment, and the health of plants, humans and other animals. Most of the aerosols are acidic and of a size where they can remain in the lungs to damage the lungs and impair function. Headaches, watery eyes, sore throat, breathing difficulties (including inducing asthma attacks), flu-like symptoms, and general lethargy are commonly-reported. These effects are especially pronounced in people with respiratory conditions and children.

The long-term health effects of vog are unknown.(Taken from Wikipedia)

Natural Remedy for Vog or Smog:
What I do:
1. Close up my house and run the A/C
2. Drink Vog Tea.  The tea is delicious inexpensive and I can feel the relief after 1 cup.  You can purchase at Whole Foods and Down to Earth.

Making Shell Jewelry and Crafts with Sea Urchins

I found Sea Shell Supply on Etsy.com.  The owner is a shell collector and  absolutely loves the beach. If you want to craft with shells then Sea Shell Supply is a great resource.  I used some of their sea urchin shells to make ornaments for Christmas and to hang from a branch that I have in my living room (see picture below).
1 Gallon Large Ocean Mix Seashells (40-50 pcs.)White Seashell Mix (15 pcs.)True Tulip Seashell (4") - Fasciolaria Tulipa

I also made some beautiful jewelry with the shells.  Shells are very delicate so it's tedious to make jewelry with them.  I usually stick to making necklaces rather than rings and bracelets which have a great chance of breaking.    I really love my necklace below.  I used these shells:

Green Sputnik Sea Urchins 4 for $4

Have fun crafting with shells or simply enjoy their beauty!

Tillandsia Air Plant Hanging Sea Urchins

My hanging jellyfish plant

I added some Tillandsia Air Plants to my home recently.  These plants don't require soil and look great hanging, in shells, on wreaths, or on your counter top.

You can find Tillandsia Air Plant Hanging Sea Urchins at SucculentDESIGNS.  Here are some from their shop that I placed in a glass vase with sand. You can make your own Tillandsia terrarium or purchase one made for you.

Tillandsia air plants need some water (can be in the form of misting every few days) and indirect sunlight.
Yet another lovely plant on my counter top in a sea urchin shell.
I added an air plant to my wreath on my door as well.  These guys are too cute!

They have other beautiful items as well at SucculentDESIGNS.  This wreath is just lovely:
