I have always used Britax car seats.  I buy them for their reputation of safety and because of their design.  
My daughter is old enough now for a big girl  booster seat version, so we now have the new Britax Frontier 85 Combination Harness-2-Booster in our car.

Mickey Mouse Visits Hawaii

It is so much fun to watch Aulani come to Disney life each day and now there is only one year to go!

When they arrived, I love the mesh look and attractive red lines on the side. After I laced them u, I walked outside to test them out. I couldn't believe that they not only the right size, but they were quite comfortable. I decided to put them to a more rigorous test and run two miles.  Yes, I was surprised because they felt great after the run, having enough cushion without feeling big or boxy. There was no pressure and these shoes were definitely lightweight.

A Class to Teach Your Child To Read

The Institute of Reading Development values the importance of reading by teaching children how to be successful at it. They have created reading development curriculum for all age groups (4 years old to adults) that integrates skills instruction and meaningful experiences with good books.

 The institute is a summer program that offers classes once a week for 5 weeks. The focus is on gaining fluency and comprehension by reading appropriate books. The classes are held at Colleges, Universities, and sites all over the United States. It is a structured program that encourages students to develop skills, confidence, and a love of reading. Parents are also learning with their children and will receive guidance on how to support their child's success through their stages of reading,

These are the stages of reading:

STAGE 1: LEARNING TO READ


STAGE 2: DEVELOPING INDEPENDENT READING SKILLS


STAGE 3: READING WITH ABSORPTION


STAGE 4: CRITICAL READING


I had the opportunity to take part in this program with my daughter over the past few weeks. Each class starts out with phonics instruction, including independent and guided reading practice and through workbook and audio program exercises. Different levels of assistance for beginning readers are modeled for parents and then parents try out these techniques with their children.


Choosing books at the right level for a child is stressed. As a teacher, I have seen many of the problems starting out when children, parents, and teachers aren't able to select appropriate books. A Book-Level Recommendation and Booklist is given to each student after the teacher has individually heard them read and has made an assessment.


My daughter loved the pace of the class. They were able to read, play decoding games, complete workbook activities and even build comprehension and develop a love of reading by listening to books read aloud. Her favorite part was participating in book discussions and role playing.

My thoughts:
This class will teach you the foundation of how to help your child read on his/her own level.  Then, it is up to you to carry it out at home.  If you follow the program, then it will work and your child and you will feel success.  However, just attending the five classes is not enough to help your child to be an independent, successful, and thoughtful reader.   

It is obvious that the Institute of Reading Development's curriculum is centered around books. I definitely recommend this summer program for parents and children to build skills, boost confidence and have a lot of fun reading! What a great way to start out the new school year. Registration for the 2011 summer classes will be advertised in the spring of 2011.

Eco Idea: Reupholster koa chair cushions

American Girl Shine On Now Doll Winner

Yea! Shine On Now was a SUCCESS! With your support American girl gave $1 million in clothing, books, dolls, and money to 4 great charities!!!

"Our family tries to stay pretty busy in our community! My husband and I try to be good examples of service to our kids. I spend between 10-15 hours a week at their school helping in their classrooms or wherever in the school needs help. I find it very rewarding to help kids who otherwise don't get much help! We also put together hygiene kits to send to Haiti and donated them to the school. Over the winter my daughters and I made cloth dolls and doll clothes for a lady who goes to an orphanage in Africa every year. My kids were so excited to be helping out other little girls just like them! We give money to our church, which them provides food and clothes to local people in need. My youngest daughter is 4 and loves to go to the nursing home and help. We have gone with our church a couple times and I played piano for them to sing to. My daughter would go sit on their laps and always came home excited about meeting a new "grandma". I want my kids to learn to find joy in helping others. I am so excited that American Girl is creating an opportunity for girls to help out!"
