Nightshades got you down?

I love vegetables, especially eggplant and tomatoes. They both belong to the nightshade family.

What Are Nightshades?
Tomatoes, white potatoes, bell peppers, hot peppers- chili and paprika, and eggplant are all part of the Nightshade Family. Also a part of this species is tobacco and some other toxic plants. Some nightshade plants have ingredients that are also found in narcotics.
What's the big deal?
Studies have found that nightshades contain high levels of alkaloids. High alkaloids can cause bones to excrete calcium and other minerals from the body. Studies have found arthritis symptoms in patients were lessened when eliminating nightshades from their diets.
Wait a second - aren't these fruits and vegetables good for you?
Yes, they are very good for you and they contain lots of vitamins and minerals. They also taste delicious but remember to be aware of your body. Too much of a good thing is not always a good thing. Moderation is key and most people have no reaction to eating nightshades. Talk to your doctor if you have arthritic symptoms or joint pain and your diet is high in these plants.
**Google nightshades to find out more

  1. you hit the nail on the head. nightshades can cause people with RA and other joint affecting autoimmune disorders some unneeded pain.

  2. Yes, I am usually fine when eating nightshades but if i eat a lot of tomato sauces my wrists and joints start to hurt more. interesting stuff-you are right moderation is key! leslie ann

  3. Awhile ago I developed an intolerance for eggplant -- used to eat it a few times a week. It suddenly started causing immediate projectile vomiting (sorry for the graphic detail). I read that nightshades are toxic in large quantities.
