ONE OPULENT STRAW!

I love this straw!!!
This is what I have been saying all day.
I've been drinking through a new glass straw from
glass dharma (they are handmade in the USA) . I wanted something safer than plastic since my daughter and I use straws, so I decided to try glass.

If you want to feel decadent, opulent, and environmentally friendly try it out. My 3 year old daughter loves drinking out of it too. It is luxurious and fun and will be the talk of your lunch party, but it is also very practical. They are safer for you -no chemicals leaching toxins from plastic, sustainable, durable, suitable for hot and cold drinks, and dishwasher safe. Using glass will also save you money because they are reusable. The straws are around $6.00

Better for the environment and your health, while being fun at the same time.....I'm hooked!

Best Organic Hot dogs

I'm impressed!

I didn't think that there was an organic hot dog that could hold its own.

I've tried quite a few and never had one that tasted as good as a "regular" hot dog.

Well, I was wrong. I had a lovely cookout at the pool today and was delighted to eat my Applegate Farms organic all grass fed beef, nitrite free hot dog. It tasted great and the lemonade went perfect with it.

Happy Eating!

KIWI LEMONADE

My family loves drinking lemonade. It is such a refreshing drink but it does require a lot of sugar to sweeten. These are some alternatives to using white sugar:
Agave has a low glycemic index

Honey contains minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium chlorine, sulphur, iron and phosphate. And vitamins B1, B2, C, B6, B5 and B3

Xylitol helps prevent cavities

.... KIWI LEMONADE....
1/2 cup of agave 0r 2/3 cup organic granulated sugar
4 cups water
4 kiwis, peeled
1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (from about 6 lemons, including pulp)

In a pitcher, mix the sugar and water until the sugar dissolves. In a blender or food processor, puree the kiwi. Add the pureed kiwi and lemon juice to the pitcher and stir to combine.
*****add some frozen strawberries for ice cubes. It looks fancy and when the strawberry starts to melt it will makes strawberry lemonade...my daughter's absolute favorite drink!!

Go Greek

I have always bought my makeup from Neiman Marcus.
Most of the makeup will not get a GREEN thumbs up, so I checked out safer cosmetics recently. It was strange and definitely not the same experience as being catered to at stores such as Nordstroms, Macy's, or MAC. Some of the makeup looked a little drab and dusty.
So, off I went to Sephora..a makeup lovers playground. They are great for letting you try anything and everything. I was surprised to discover a few safer brands. One of them (my new favorite) is KORRES.

Established in 1996 in Greece, Korres has a full makeup and skin care line that has color, essential oils, and is safe.
Finally a quality makeup in a pretty package.

It's all about the numbers

On all produce there some numbers on a small sticker .
What do the numbers on fruit and veggies mean in the grocery store?

A little education on the numbers:

Four digit numbers starting with 3 or 4 mean:
non-GMO, conventionally grown

Five digit numbers starting with 8 mean:
the produce is GMO

Five digit numbers beginning with 9 mean:
organically grown

Which one is the best?

USDA organically grown/local: best
Conventional: 2nd best
GMO : not enough research done on genetically modified organisms.

However; animals, if given the choice will not eat it...hmmmm...sound scary? Well, I will post the research I have found soon.

Lotion or Oil?

Skin is our largest organ and absorbs everything we put on it from makeup, sunscreen, to lotion. It's important to take care of your skin and who doesn't like the feeling of soft clean skin?

I have used hundreds of different types of lotions. Honestly, most of them made my skin feel great and it didn't matter if it came from a department store or the drug store. However, when I found out that I could only understand less than 2 of the 25 ingredients on the label I started to look for a healthier way to go.

There are some very nice paraben free organic lotions at your local health food store but I prefer coconut oil. I buy a large jar of it for my house and pour it into very fancy bottles.

There are many health benefits to boot. Coconut oil contains lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid. It is an antioxidant, anti fungal, and antibacterial. The body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which helps fight viruses and bacteria. Not to mention that it is safe and tastes great. I use it on my daughter's curly hair too and it's very moisturizing. A little goes a long way so use sparingly and allow about 10 minutes to absorb into your skin before you lay down because oil can be messy to clean.

What brand?

It should be extra virgin and USDA organic.

The garden of life is very good.

Easy Reading

A shady tree, a cozy blanket, and a good book is a recipe for a great afternoon. I do this a lot as a mom but now it's with my daughter and we are reading children's books.

It's hard to find the alone time to do a lot of adult reading. That is why I enjoy health magazines so much because I can read on the go: in my car or waiting for an appointment. I pick up some valuable tips on great new products and ways to keep my family healthy. One such healthy living organic magazine is KIWI. They also have valuable coupons and fun contests.

Muumuu Heaven

Muumuu Heaven is a family-run business that creates one of a kind, eco-conscious clothing. Located in Kailua on Oahu, Hawaii. It is a fabulous store that has had a lot of attention recently in Hollywood. Their dresses are my favorite. They are lightweight, extremely comfortable and have such an Elegant Hawaiian look to them.

Skin Care

There has been a lot of talk recently about parabens and other harmful chemicals in makeup and skin care. If you want to see how your favorite products measure up check out:
http://www.ewg.org/
They also have a great article on sunscreens. Mineral sunscreens are better for you considering that the skin absorbs everything. One of my favorites is UV natural. A good friend turned me onto it one day at the pool and it works great with an excellent rating from ewg. It contains grape seed oil which is very nourishing for your skin. It is a little pricey but a little goes a long way with this pick. I have only found it in whole foods so far.

Hula Girl

I thank God every day that I get to live in Hawaii. The beautiful weather, warm breezes and flowers everywhere. I love wearing fresh flowers and putting flowers in my daughter's hair. The flowers photograph great too. Here is a great website and some of my favorite designs for flower hairclips: http://www.flowerclip.com/

Undercover Sauce

Adults and children cannot seem to get enough vegetables these days. This is partially due to the lack of vitamins in them from depleted soil and pesticides.

I found that giving my daughter raw veggies but also adding them into sauces, smoothies, etc. would ensure that she would be getting enough. Also, if your child doesn't like to eat his/her veggies, and meal time is stressful, then this is an easy recipe that your kids can enjoy.

Spaghetti Sauce:
1 jar of organic tomato sauce
1 cup of sliced carrots
1 cup of spinach or kale
sprinkle of dried/fresh oregano
sprinkle of dried/ fresh basil
When it has cooked down puree with food processor

Fresh Laundry

A mommy's laundry basket never seems to be empty. I am always doing laundry so I want it to be clean, fresh smelling, but also chemical free. I have been more sensitive to the chemical free part when my daughter was born and have read up on living a natural lifestyle. Here are some tricks I have learned that I would love to share with you.

  1. Detergent-always fragrance free

  2. Fabric Softener-I use vinegar for whites. It works great for kitchen and bathroom laundry. For our clothing I use Mountain Green all natural lavender

  3. Unfortunately, mold and bacteria can thrive when dirty laundry sits too long. A great alternative to bleach is oregano oil and tea tree oil. A couple drops is all you need in the water when washing along with detergent. They are anti-fungal and work great.

Happy Washing

Wikki Stixs Review

What are they:
I first discovered these fun wax sticks at a restaurant. A few months later my neighbor had bought them for her daughter and raved about the wonderful things she was making with them. After some investigation, I was pleasantly surprised to learn how safe and creative Wikki Stix were. Not only are they safe but very educational. There are many kinesthetic learning activities you can do with them such as making numbers and letters. Wikki Stix can be used for pre-braille readiness, OT and special needs children. They have different kits and sets you can buy, such as holiday, numbers, letters, and ocean fun. I think they make excellent party favors too.
Wikki Stix are easy to carry in your purse to a restaurant, waiting room, or any situation where you need immediate entertainment for your little ones. Visit Wikki Stix to learn more.
