Your Baby Can Read Giveaway!!

I have seen the infomercials on Television, like many of you, for "Your Baby Can Read." It's amazing to see the babies this young reading words. It's almost unbelievable! As a teacher and mom, I was skeptical about the process. However, my interest was peaked. I didn't have it to use when my daughter was a baby, but I still wanted it to try it even though she is 3 years old.

I was impressed with the quality of the program. The system comprises of 3 elements: 5 DVD Set with Sliding Word Cards, 50 Word Game Cards, 82 Double Sided Word Cards, 5 Lift-A-Flap Books, The “How To” Parent’s Guide, and free Window Book, Workshop DVD, and Music CD.

Your Baby Can Read program description according to the manual:

Dr. Robert C. Titzer, Ph.D., a professor and teacher for over 15 years,has extensively researched infant learning and development. His program isdesigned for children between the ages of 3 months and 5 years. In the firstyears of a child’ life, tens of thousands of synaptic connections are made eachsecond in the brain, opening the door for increased learning capacity. Normally,children don’t start learning to read until age 5 or 6 years old, but thenatural window of opportunity begins to close around age 4.A baby’s brain thrives on stimulation and develops nearly 90% duringthe first five years of life! Dr. Titzer says the current practice of startingto teach reading skills in school is too late and children benefit greatly fromgetting a much earlier start since a child basically has only one natural windowfor learning language — from about birth to about age four. During this periodit is easier for a child to learn any type of language including spoken,receptive, foreign and written language. The earlier the child is taught to readthe better they will read and the more likely they will enjoy it.

My Thoughts (My review is based on a 3 year old, not a baby).

My daughter caught on very quickly and was memorizing many words a day. I showed the DVD to her while on car trips, and played games using the cards and books daily. Almost immediately, I saw how important parent involvement and positive reinforcement is to making this system work, especially for an older child! Babies will sit and watch the DVDs and stare at the word cards, but older children might get bored more easily with it being repetitious. However, the quality of the DVDs were very good.

We focused more on the word cards because that is what she enjoyed. Babies learn to memorize through the repetitious nature and eventually make associations with word patterns, but my daughter yearned for more information. She was very quick to memorize but wanted to know what letters were silent and why. She wanted to know why the "g" in "giraffe" did not make the "g" sound as in "go." It was very exciting to see how when children get older they need to understand the system. In my opinion, Your Baby Can Read can be successfully used as a curriculum, but the parent MUST make it fun for it to work.
